How much does an Uber ride cost worldwide?

Uber has transformed the way we travel from A to B – and the service shows no symptoms of slowing down, even as the fuel crisis pushes prices up.

The enterprise has recently celebrated its billionth trip in Africa and announced a raft of tech developments that boosts its appeal over competitors such as Lyft for drivers and passengers (although drivers might not be so optimistic about Uber’s planned delivery robots).

One reason Uber can weather global pressure to increase prices is that the enterprise has deep pockets. Meanwhile, competing companies face problems such as low driver uptake or the unfortunate business of having launched as a Russian start-up (although the latter is now an American company whose creators disavow and don’t support the invasion of Ukraine).

While growth pricing always feels like a kick in the teeth, traditional taxis have long embraced extreme pricing in many places. Uber works in over 10 thousand world cities, and the brand’s familiarity is comforting when faced with travel from a foreign airport. But Uber pricing varies from city to city, so it’s best to set off with a decent idea of what it might cost you to open that app.

Methodology

For this project, World Cities are capitals in every nation where Uber works. Abidjan, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), is an exception because it is not the capital but the only city in the country where Uber operates.

U.S. Cities category is the 30 most populated cities in the U.S. where Uber operates, and UK Cities are the 30 most populated cities in the UK where Uber operates.

San Jose, CA, and San Francisco, CA, are among the most populated cities in the United States, but they were omitted from the research because Uber doesn’t provide cost estimations for these cities (checked on multiple occasions). Likewise, a few World Cities were excluded due to the lack of estimates. For each city, a 10km journey was manually curated. The trip was from the city center as determined by the Uber estimate tool. From this point, Google Maps chose a location 10km away from the city center by car.

For all cities, each address was analyzed 3 separate times in the Uber estimate tool, e.g., workday rush hour (mainly around 8 am), lower demand time on the weekend (primarily early Sunday morning), and workday afternoon outside of rush hour. All times were local. The values for UberX rides were recorded. If the city did not have UberX, the best alternative was chosen, i.e., affordable compact rides. Some locations had only taxi options available. Finally, all data were categorized into tabs.

The Average Cost of an Uber Worldwide

Uber’s local pricing varies along with differences in taxes, regulations, income, and road conditions. NetCredit averaged the cost of sample journeys in capital cities worldwide to find which cost the most.

The average price across the cities on the continent maps is $11.70. In two-thirds of these cities, the cost of an average 10km Uber journey is lower than this. 14 of the 20 countries with a higher than average Uber ride are in Europe.

The Average Cost of an Uber in Cities in North America

Washington D.C. ($21.86) is the North American capital with the costliest average Uber journey, which is 63.3% more expensive than second-placed Ottawa in Canada ($13.39).

The Average Cost of an Uber in Cities in South America

In Colombia, Uber provides a car rental + driver service rather than ‘ride-sharing’ due to regulation issues. This reduces Uber’s tax costs and fares, making Bogota the cheapest South American capital to ride ($3.69).

The Average Cost of an Uber in Cities in The Middle East & Central Asia

Tel Aviv ($20.95) is the world’s most expensive city to live in, according to the World Economic Forum – but while it has the highest Uber rates in the region, the Israeli city is only world #13 for Uber prices.

The Average Cost of an Uber in Cities in The Rest of Asia & Oceania

Pretoria ($7.21) in South Africa has the highest fares on the continent.

The Most and Least Expensive Cities for Uber Rides

Eight of the ten most expensive capital cities for Uber are in Europe. Uber has faced tough challenges from regulators and taxi drivers on the continent, pushing prices up. And now, European fuel costs are soaring in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The 1O least expensive Uber markets are mainly in Africa and Asian countries. In areas with low car ownership, such as Islamabad ($1.39) and New Delhi ($2.47), many Uber drivers work for fleet owners who don’t pass on Uber incentives or a percentage cut. The knock-on effect is poor service quality that further lowers prices.

Uber has traveled a rocky road in the UK. The service was briefly banned in London after breaking regulations about personal safety. And in March 2022, Uber raised fares across the country after courts ruled the company should add 20% in Value Added Tax (VAT) to rides.
